CAPTAIN Michael L. Burd, USN

 

 

CAPT Burd was born and raised in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He is a 1993 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, was designated a Naval Aviator in November 1995 and holds a Master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College.

 

CAPT Burd’s sea assignments include an initial operational tour with the HSL-42 Proud Warriors. While there, he completed deployments with the USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV 67) Battle Group aboard USS SPRUANCE (DD 963) and the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) Battle Group aboard USS PETERSON (DD 969). Following his first shore tour assignment, he served as squadron Seahawk Weapons and Tactics Instructor with the HSL-46 Grandmasters where he was responsible for advanced tactical training and qualification of detachment combat aircrews. In 2003, CAPT Burd returned to HSL-42 for his Department Head tour and led a two-plane detachment in USS VICKSBURG (CG 69), “shotgun” escort for the USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV 67) Carrier Strike Group, during a combat deployment in support of Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM. He concluded his tour as Operations Officer and was recognized as the 2005 HSL-42 Officer of the Year, was presented the 2005 HSMWINGLANT Rear Admiral Alan G. Paulson Award for inspirational leadership, and was selected by his peers for the 2005 Commander, Naval Air Forces Leadership Award. From February 2011 to May 2012, CAPT Burd served as Commanding Officer of HSL-46 and led his squadron through the HSM community’s first expeditionary-to-expeditionary transition to the MH-60R Seahawk.

 

Ashore, CAPT Burd served with the HSL-40 Airwolves as a Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) Flight Instructor and was recognized as squadron Pilot of the Year in 2001 and 2002. Prior to command, he completed a tour in Washington, D.C. on the Joint Staff, Operations Directorate (J-3), Operations Team 3 in the National Military Command Center. Following command, he served in Millington, TN as PERS-43 Deputy Director and Head Air Combat Placement Officer. Selected for “Bonus” command, CAPT Burd served as Commanding Officer of HSM-40 from April 2014 to August 2015, during which time the Airwolves earned the 2014 CDR Theodore G. Ellyson Award for FRS Aviator Production Excellence. He assumed the duties of Deputy Commander, Helicopter Maritime Strike Wing Atlantic in September 2015 and took command as the Wing’s 19th Commodore in May 2017.

 

CAPT Burd has accumulated more than 3,800 mishap-free flight hours. He is a Joint Qualified Officer and personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (3), Air Medal (single action and strike/flight awards), Navy Commendation Medal (4), Navy Achievement Medal (3), and numerous unit and campaign awards.
