COMMAND MASTER CHIEF
Senior Chief Barry
Deckert, a native of Bellevue, Kentucky, graduated from Bellevue High School in
1994 and entered the Navy under the delayed entry program. He attended basic training at Recruit
Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois.
After completion of basic training, he attended “A” school in Pensacola,
FL, and received the rate of Aviation Electrician’s Mate.
His first duty station
was with the “Atlas” Marines and Sailors at HMT-303, stationed in Camp
Pendleton, CA, where he served as an Avionics Technician and performed maintenance
on UH-1N, HH-1N, and AW-1N helicopters.
His next assignment was with the “Wolfpack” of HSL-45, located in Naval
Air Station North Island, Coronado, CA.
It was here that he advanced to the rank of Petty Officer First Class
and qualified as an Enlisted Air Warfare Specialist. He also completed deployments on board the
USS OLDENDORF (DD 972) with Detachment SEVEN, the USS INGRAHAM (FFG 61) with
Detachment ONE, and the USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN (CG 57) with Detachment FOUR.
Upon return from
deployment with Detachment FOUR, Senior Chief Deckert transferred to the
“Swampfoxes” at HSL-44, stationed in Mayport, FL as a Quality Assurance Representative,
where he qualified Safe-for-Flight and advanced to Chief Petty Officer. Shortly after selection to Chief, he was
ordered to report the “Scorpions” of HSL-49.
There, Senior Chief Deckert deployed as the Detachment FIVE Leading Chief Petty Officer on board the USS
THACH (FFG 43) which completed an around-the-world deployment and qualified as
an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist.
From there, Senior Chief Deckert transferred to instructor duty at Naval
Air Technical Training Center, Pensacola, FL.
During his tour he managed the Aviation Fundamentals courses for all
avionic rates in the Navy and Marine Corps, qualified as a Master Training
Specialist, and advanced to the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer.
Senior Chief Deckert is
a graduate of the U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 180, Blue
Group). He has earned an Associates of
Science Degree in Aeronautics from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in
2013, and is nearing completion of his Bachelor degree from the same
university. He reported to the
“Nightdippers” of HSC-5 in June 2014, and assumed the position of Command
Senior Enlisted Leader in November 2014.
His personal awards include: Navy
and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3); Navy and Marine Corps Achievement
Medal (4 awards) and various unit and campaign awards.
