CAPTAIN SEAN T. MORIARTY

CHIEF OF STAFF 

 CARRIER STRIKE GROUP TWO

  Captain Sean Moriarty is a native of Gilbertville, Massachusetts and graduated in 1989 with a BS in Engineering from the United States Naval Academy.  Captain Moriarty attended Surface Warfare Officer School, Division Officer Course in San Diego in January 1991.

  Captain Moriarty's first sea duty was aboard USS OBRIEN (DD 975) from July 1991 to July 1995 where he served as the Communications Officer, CIC Officer, Main Propulsion Assistant, and Chief Engineer.  This tour included a homeport shift from San Diego, CA to Yokosuka, Japan, two Middle East deployments and an EDSRA.

  Following his Division Officer tour, Captain Moriarty attended the Naval Post Graduate School, earning a Master of Science in Operations Research in 1997.  Following post graduate school, and after successful completion of Department Head School, Captain Moriarty served as the Chief Engineer in USS STOUT (DDG 55) from July 1998 to December 1999.  This tour included a deployment to the Arabian Gulf conducting Maritime Interception Operations in support of United Nations resolutions and participation in Operation Desert Fox.  Next, he served aboard USS NORMANDY (CG60) from January 2000 to February 2001 as the Chief Engineer which included a deployment to the Fifth Fleet and Sixth Fleet AORs.  Following his tour in NORMANDY, Captain Moriarty was assigned to Commander, US Second Fleet for 6 months prior to attending the Naval War College.

  After graduating from the Naval War College with a Master of Arts degree in National Security Affairs and Strategic Studies he served as Executive Officer onboard USS RAMAGE (DDG 61) from October 2002 to April 2004.  Captain Moriarty was then assigned to Commander, Destroyer Squadron Eighteen as the Chief Staff Officer.  During this tour he oversaw the transition of DESRON 18 to Regional Support Organization, Norfolk.

  In November 2005 Captain Moriarty assumed Command of Mobile Security Squadron Six in Portsmouth, VA.  After a successful command tour he was assigned to the Commander, Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa as the Executive Assistant to the Commander from December 2007 to February 2009.  In June 2009 he transferred to Commander, Carrier Strike Group Eight as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Plans and Operations where he made two deployments to the Fifth Fleet AOR.  Captain Moriarty's most recent assignment was to Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Training.

  Captain Moriarty's personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (3), Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal (5), and Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
