What is SPAWAR?
- "SPAWAR" is Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command, one of the Navy's major acquisition commands; it is located in San Diego. SPAWAR has three field activities--known as Space and Naval Warfare Systems Centers, located in San Diego, Chesapeake and Charleston. These field activities are generally abbreviated as SPAWAR Systems Centers. Due to the confusion caused by the nearly identical names and co-location several years ago of SPAWAR in San Diego, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center, Pacific abbreviates its command title as SSC Pacific. Over the years, SSC Pacific has also been known as Naval Command, Control and Ocean Surveillance Center Research, Development, Test and Evaluation Division (NCCOSC RDT&E Division, or NRaD); Naval Ocean Systems Center (NOSC); Naval Electronics Laboratory Center (NELC); and Naval Undersea Center (NUC). This is SSC Pacific Homepage.

How do I get a job with the robotics group at SSC Pacific?
- SSC Pacific is principally staffed by civilian government employees, plus a small percentage of uniformed military personnel, and is supported by contract personnel. For information on employment at SSC-PAC look at the careers page.

-
How do I get permission to use one or more images from this website?
- In general, these are US Government images not protected by copyright, so you may use them, but we ask that you provide acknowledgement of the source and notify us that you are using the images. The acknowledgement should read "Image courtesy of Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center, Pacific".
In addition, if the images are to be used in a published book, newspaper, magazine, or technical or trade publication, we ask that you contact our Public Affairs Office at 619-553-2717 in order to ensure that the text accompanying the images accurately reflects the name of our organization and appropriately credits the relevant sponsor and the roles of the people and other organizations involved.
We would also very much appreciate receiving a copy of the final work, if it can be sent to us at no cost. Please mail it to Robotics Archive, SPAWAR Systems Center D371, 53406 Woodward Road, San Diego CA 92152-7383, USA.

How do I buy a product?
- We do not sell anything in the commercial marketplace. SSC-PAC is a U.S. Navy R&D Center, and our robotics group produces rapid prototypes of various robotic systems and subsystems for evaluation in various military applications. However, many of our systems make extensive use of commercial products and technologies which are available from their manufacturers.

-
My company has just developed a breakthrough new product -- how do I sell it to you?
- Our robotics group generally produces only one or two of each prototype system, so we do not purchase significant quantities of any components or subsystems, and we do not maintain formal bid lists for any items. Nevertheless, we are always searching for and informally evaluating relevant new products in such categories as sensors, actuators, and embedded computers.

-
Can you send me all the information on a product for my school term paper?
- Sorry, no! We simply do not have the manpower available to compile and forward information on broad topics. Look at the next FAQ for a suggestion.
+
-
How can I learn more about the product and how it operates?
- Start by looking at all the material available on this website, and then follow up with the technical papers listed on our index of publications, many of which can be downloaded directly from this site. Then search the Web for related project and product information. Then, if you have specific questions, please feel free to ask us. But pay attention to the dates associated with each project -- we probably have NO additional information on a project that was developed in the '60s or '70s, and it will be hit-or-miss for the '80s.
