For some 30 years, the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SSC Pacific, formerly SSC San Diego), Platform Communications Systems Division, in San Diego, CA, has met the crucial requirements of the Navy's Submarine Force for reliable state-of-the-art submarine communications.  This division, under its prime sponsor, SPAWARSYSCOM PMW 173, is recognized worldwide as a center of excellence for submarine communications, including Very Low Frequency (VLF) and Low Frequency (LF) communications.  This reputation was gained through ongoing Research and Development which takes a systems approach to VLF/LF and to overall submarine communications.  That is, doing systems engineering, signal design, high-power engineering, communications mode design and development, receiver and transmitter RDT&E, and message processing.  In addition, the Platform Communications Systems Division assumes the life-cycle responsibility for the maintenance of its deployed systems.

The Division's products are software-intensive and are mainly for the Submarine Force, but they also apply to a wider group of platforms including U.S. Air Force MILSTAR communications and terminal management and control.  Division business areas include upgrade of deployed systems and SCSS systems engineering.  For strategic communications work, the Division is doing the Research and Development for SCSS, and an evolving business area is the integration of Submarine C4I systems.
