From 1969 to the late 1990s, the primary mission of Camp Atterbury was to support to the Indiana National Guard and its various missions, including providing support with conflicts in Vietnam, Desert Shield, and Desert Storm. In 2003, the Department of Defense called upon Camp Atterbury to help support war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as numerous peacekeeping and support operations worldwide.
