Captain (CAPT) Gerald DeLong, a native of Belvidere, Illinois, graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science degree (Zoology) and from Mississippi State University in 1995 with a Master of Science degree (Veterinary Medical Science). He joined the United States Navy in 1997 as a Medical Service Corps Officer (industrial hygiene specialty) and received his initial industrial hygiene training at Norfolk Naval Shipyard while assigned to Navy Medical Center Portsmouth from 1997 to 1999.
CAPT DeLong was selected for Duty Under Instruction (2005 to 2008) and attended Virginia Commonwealth University where he received a Doctor of Philosophy degree (Pharmacology and Toxicology). In 2008, CAPT DeLong was assigned as an Assistant Professor of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. He was also selected as the acting Division Director and later remained as the Deputy Director for the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Division. In 2011, CAPT DeLong earned the elite designation of Certified Industrial Hygienist awarded by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene.
In 2011, CAPT DeLong became the Officer in Charge for the Portsmouth Detachment of the Naval Inspector General where he was responsible for conducting special studies as directed by the Secretary of the Navy, the Chief of Naval Operations and the Naval Inspector General. CAPT DeLong was assigned to the Naval Safety Center as the Safety Assurance Division Head. He is leading the incorporation of Fleet requirements and safety management principles into the next generation of the Navy's safety management software.
CAPT DeLong’s awards include: Surface Warfare Medical Duty Officer warfare device, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon (two), Battle “E” Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Sea Service Ribbon.
