A native of Dayton, Ohio, Captain Nickerson is a graduate of the University of Missouri – Columbia. He received his commission in May 1986 through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps.
Captain Nickerson’s first tour of duty was in USS LEFTWICH (DD 984), where he served as Missile Officer and Auxiliaries Officer. Subsequent sea duty assignments include Combat Systems Officer, USS FORD (FFG 54); Commissioning Combat Systems Officer, USS LABOON (DDG 58); Executive Officer, USS SHILOH (CG 67); Commanding Officer, USS DECATUR (DDG 73); Assistant Chief of Staff for Plans (N5), Commander Carrier Strike Group Nine; Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations (N3), Commander Carrier Strike Group Nine; and Commander, Destroyer Squadron FOUR ZERO.
Ashore, Captain Nickerson has served as an action officer in the Joint Staff J-8/Joint Theater Air and Missile Defense Organization; the Joint Staff J-5/Deputy Directorate for Strategy and Policy, Space and Missile Defense Policy Division; the Joint Staff J-5/Deputy Directorate for War on Terrorism, Strategic Planning Division; a Section Head on the Staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, Director, Assessment Division (N81), Campaign Analysis Branch; and, the Deputy Director, Operations and Plans Division (N31B) on the Staff of the Chief of Naval Operations. He is currently assigned as the Chief of Staff for Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. TENTH Fleet.
Captain Nickerson holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri – Columbia and a Master of Science Degree in Telecommunications Systems Management from the Naval Post Graduate School. He is also a graduate of the Air Command and Staff College and the Joint Forces Staff College.
Captain Nickerson’s awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and various campaign, unit, and service awards.
