LIEUTENANT COMMANDER Stephen M. Kantz, USN
 
Lieutenant Commander Stephen M. Kantz, USN was commissioned in 2001 from the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) with a Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology and a minor in leadership. He soon reported to Naval Technical Training Center, Corry Station in Pensacola, FL for Naval Cryptologic Officer Basic Course. Upon completion he was assigned to Naval Security Group Activity (NSGA) Kunia, Hawaii as the Joint Operations Senior Watch Officer and then Branch Chief within the Computer Network Operations Department. During his assignment, NSGA Kunia combined with NSGA Pearl Harbor and was later reestablished as Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Hawaii.

In 2004, Lieutenant Commander Kantz matriculated at Naval Postgraduate School Monterey, CA where he earned his Master’s Degree in Computer Science as well as his Command and Staff Diploma from the Naval War College for Phase One of Joint Professional Military Education.

Returning to operations, Lieutenant Commander Kantz reported to NIOC Misawa, Japan in 2007 deploying as an Airborne Cryptologic Direct Support Element Officer to Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron ONE (VQ-1) and TWO (VQ-2) during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM and missions supporting SEVENTH Fleet and United States Pacific Command (USPACOM). He also qualified as Naval Air Observer and served as Operations Department Head. Following flight duty in 2009, Lieutenant Commander Kantz accepted a Global War on Terror Support Assignment to Special Operations Command, Central forward deployed to Combined Forces Special Operations Component Command headquarters as the Afghanistan and Pakistan Desk Officer for Counter Insurgency Operations and Foreign Internal Defense during Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

Lieutenant Commander Kantz was then assigned to NIOC Suitland in 2010 where he served as the Cyber Effects Department Head. He qualified as an Information Dominance Corps Warfare Officer in December 2010. NIOC Suitland was reestablished as Navy Cyber Warfare Development Group in 2011.

In January 2012, Lieutenant Commander Kantz reported to Special Operations Command, Pacific (SOCPAC) where he served as the Signals Intelligence Officer and Chief of the SOCPAC Theater Special Operations Command Cryptologic Support Element. He earned Joint Qualified Officer designation in May 2015.

Lieutenant Commander Kantz reported as Executive Officer of NIOC Whidbey Island in November 2015.

Among his personal awards, Lieutenant Commander Kantz has earned the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (First Strike), the Joint Service Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Navy Commendation Medal and Navy Achievement medal.
