COMMANDER Tim McGeehan, USN
CDR Tim McGeehan hails from Virginia. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2000 with a BS in Oceanography (Honors) and a minor in French Language. He was designated as a Navy Oceanographer in 2001.
 
CDR McGeehan has served in a variety of assignments at sea. His initial assignment was as a hydrographic surveyor with the Fleet Survey Team, where he deployed to Africa, the Middle East, and the Pacific in support of operational requirements. He later served onboard USS NORMANDY (CG 60) as Assistant Weapons Officer. In 2004, he assumed duties with the Personnel Exchange Program- UK as a hydrographic surveyor onboard the Royal Navy deep ocean survey ship HMS SCOTT. During this tour he conducted Atlantic and Indian Ocean deployments, including Indonesian post-tsunami relief operations. In 2011, CDR McGeehan reported to Commander, Carrier Strike Group TWO (CSG-2) as the Staff METOC Officer, with deployment to the SIXTH and FIFTH Fleet AORs. While at CSG-2 he qualified as Battle Watch Captain and executed additional duties as Information Operations Deputy and Space Operations Officer.
 
CDR McGeehan’s shore tours include service as Flag Aide to the Chief of Naval Research, Director Fellow to CNO Strategic Studies Group 30, and Military Deputy for Oceanography at the Naval Research Laboratory (Stennis Space Center detachment). In 2014, he transferred to OPNAV to serve as Speechwriter for the Chief of Naval Operations. He served in that capacity until CNO’s retirement, followed by a brief assignment as the Arctic Affairs Officer in the Office of the Oceanographer of the Navy (OPNAV N2/N6E). In May 2016, he assumed command of Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Whidbey Island.
 
CDR McGeehan holds an MA in Defense and Strategic Studies (with Distinction) from the Naval War College, a dual MS in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography (with Distinction) from the Naval Postgraduate School, and a PhD in Physical Oceanography (also from the Naval Postgraduate School). He is a qualified Information Warfare Officer, Surface Warfare Officer, Navy Diver (SCUBA), and member of Space Cadre.  In his after-hours time, he is a Fellow of the Explorers Club, published scientist and author, and patented inventor.
