Lieutenant Commander Clay C. Herring is a native of Ocean Springs, MS and attended Auburn University, graduating Magna Cum Laude and earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering in June of 2000.  He received his commission through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps.

LCDR Herring worked under the Staff Cryptologist at the Naval Special Warfare Command in Coronado, CA before reporting to Naval Security Group Activity, Fort Gordon, GA, in May of 2002.  There, he served as an Operations Watch Officer, Direct Support Officer (Subsurface), and Training Division Officer within the Operations Department.  During this tour, he deployed in support of U.S. Fifth and Sixth Fleets.

From June of 2005 to September of 2007, LCDR Herring attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, where he earned a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and completed Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) phase I.

From September, 2007 to December, 2009, LCDR Herring served as a Tactical Information Operations (TIO) Officer at Naval Special Warfare Support Activity ONE in Coronado, CA.  He was among the first to assume the newly established TIO Officer role within the Naval Special Warfare (NSW) community.  He deployed to Iraq as the N39 of an NSW Squadron and served as the N39 and N6 Department Head while in garrison.

In January of 2010, LCDR Herring reported to the USSOCOM Joint Communications Integration Element (JCIE) in Washington, DC.  During his three year joint tour, LCDR Herring served as the Director of Intelligence (J2) and deployed to Afghanistan in support of a Joint Special Operations Task Force.  Following this assignment, LCDR Herring attended the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, VA, completing JPME phase II in June of 2013.

Awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, and various campaign and service medals.
