Master Chief Byrd enlisted in the U.S. Navy in February 1986 and completed Basic and Apprenticeship Training at RTC/NTC, San Diego, California.

His first tour of duty was on board the USS BRUMBY (FF-1044) as a non-designated Seaman.  He later became a Quartermaster striker and was advanced to Petty Officer Third Class.  Upon the decommissioning of the BRUMBY Master Chief Byrd reported to USS SAN JACINTO (CG-56) where he served as Work Center Supervisor and Chart Petty Officer.  During his tour on board SAN JACINTO, he deployed to the Red Sea in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. 

His next tour of duty was at NAS Oceana Security Detachment where he served as a Patrolman and later qualified as a Watch Commander.  After his tour at NAS Oceana he became a part of the commissioning crew of the USS OAK HILL (LSD-51).  He then reported to the USS WASP(LHD-1) where he served as the Assistance Navigator and Leading Quartermaster.  Following his tour on board WASP Master Chief then reported for duty on the staff of Commander Second Fleet serving as Readiness Officer and Fleet Scheduler.  Upon completion of his tour at Second Fleet, Master Chief Byrd then reported to the staff of COMNAVSURFLANT where he served as Operations Center Supervisor and Futures Scheduling Officer.  He than reported to Bath, Maine for pre-commissioning duties on board USS BAINBRIDGE (DDG-96) where he served as the Assistance Navigator and Navigation and Administration Leading Chief Petty Officer.  While assigned to the BAINBRIDGE, he was selected to the Command Senior Chief Program in which he received orders to the USS NICHOLAS (FFG-47).  While serving on board the NICHOLAS, he was selected to the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer.  In October 2009, he assumed duties as the Command Master Chief of Strike Fighter Squadron ONE FOUR THREE "Puking Dogs."   After a successful tour at STRIKE FIGHTER Squadron ONE FOUR THREE, he assumed duties as the eleventh Command Master Chief of NCTAMS LANT. 

Master Chief Byrd holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Liberal Arts from Excelsior College.  He is currently pursuing a Master Degree in Urban Education/Community Counseling from Norfolk State University.  He is a graduate of the U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Academy, Class 137 (Gold).  He is qualified as an Enlisted Information Dominance Warfare, Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist, and Enlisted Air Warfare Specialist.  His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (Five awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (Four awards), and various unit and campaign awards.
