Operations Director of the DON Assistant for Administration
On April 24, 2011, Ms. Hughes became the Director, Operations Directorate with the Office of the DON Assistant for Administration. She is responsible for Contracts Management, Facilities and Support Services, Human Resources, and Security.
Ms. Hughes became a member of the Senior Executive Service in June 2003 and has 37 years of total Government service.
Ms. Hughes started her Federal career with the Department of Energy before becoming an auditor with the Naval Audit Service in May 1978. She has held key supervisory positions in all phases of the audit process. From January 1994 to August 1995, she served as Acting Director, Plans and Policy Directorate where she was one of the primary advisors to the Auditor General on issues involving audit policy and procedures. She served as the Executive Assistant to the Auditor General of the Navy. She served as the Assistant Auditor General for Installations and Environmental Audits from August 2001 until August 2006 when she became the Assistant Auditor General for Research, Development, Acquisition, and Logistics Audits. From June 2010 to April 2011, Ms. Hughes served as the Assistant Auditor General for Internal Controls, Contracts, and Investigative Support.
Ms. Hughes attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA., graduated with a bachelor's of science degree in commerce (major in accounting). She completed graduate work at George Washington University and at the Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. She completed the “Leadership for a Democratic Society Program at the Federal Executive Institute in Charlottesville, VA. Ms. Hughes is a Certified Internal Auditor and a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors and the Association of Government Accountants.
Ms. Hughes has received numerous awards throughout her career, including the DON Superior Civilian Service Award in 2001.
