Lieutenant (O3) Gustavo ALMEIDA MATOS de Carvalho was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He entered the Brazilian Naval High School in February 1996 and the Brazilian Naval Academy in January of 1999, graduating in December of 2002.
During 2003, as a Midshipman, he sailed aboard the Brazilian Navy’s Training Ship “Brasil”, visiting ports in Venezuela, the United States, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany, Russia, Sweden, Denmark, France, Spain, Italy, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Portugal and Brazil. At the end of that year, he became Second Lieutenant.
In 2004, he was transferred to Belém, Brazil and appointed to serve on board of the Patrol Boat “Guarujá” and from January 2005 to June 2006, he has served in the Patrol Boat “Pampeiro”. At the end of that year, December 2005, he became First Lieutenant.
From June 2006 to June 2007, he was stationed in a Brazilian Navy’s Instruction Center qualifying as Surface Warfare Officer, specialized in Communications. Then he was assigned as the Communications Officer of Frigate “Independência”, for two and a half years.
In 2008, took part on a personal interchange program, sailing aboard of the German Combat Support Ship “Frankfurt am Main” and has visited Curaçao and Colombia.
During 2010, he was again on board the Brazilian Navy’s Training Ship “Brasil”, this time as an Instructor, visiting ports in Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Equator, Colombia, Cuba, the United States, France, Sweden, Germany, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece and Brazil.
From December 2010 through December 2011, he was the flag aide of the Brazilian Fleet Commander-in-Chief.
From February 2012 to February 2013, he was the Commanding Officer of Patrol Boat “Grajaú” in Natal, Brazil. And from February to September 2013, he was the Logistics and Operations Officer on the Staff of the Northeast Naval Patrol Command Grouping.
In December 2013 he assumed as Assistant Secretary for Operations and Statistics of the Inter-American Naval Telecommunications Network, in Mayport, Florida
