Embracing Diversity – Outreach, Mentoring

Outreach is everyone's business. From the Chief of Naval Operations to the  newest Seaman, everyone has a chance to lead. Each individual Sailor and Civilian in the Navy has a story to tell, and someone to listen.

One of the key activities of the Navy Diversity Directorate is to engage in outreach at the national level with a diverse range of Affinity Groups. The CNO  has directed leadership to engage as well, at the national or regional level, participating in events, and facilitating attendance of junior officers and enlisted members. Commanders are also encouraged to submit personnel for awards - both Sailors and civilians.

In addition to showing the uniform and helping to increase positive awareness of the Navy and its opportunities, participation in many of these events contributes to another goal of the Directorate, which is to encourage STEM learning for youth. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education are key elements to success in many Navy career paths, as well as throughout society. Many of the groups that the Navy works with focus on mentoring and assisting youth in these areas.

For those from the Navy who participate in outreach activities, there are often opportunities to mentor and equally important, to be mentored. Seeking out individuals with like interests and like backgrounds is one way to gain support in one’s personal and professional life, and the Navy encourages individuals to pursue activities that help with professional development as well as contribute to a health life-work balance.

Individuals and organizations are encouraged to celebrate the diverse makeup of our Navy Total Force, and to participate in activities enhancing and embracing Navy diversity.
