Transient Personnel Units (TPUs) provide for the efficient and expeditious processing of all transient personnel assigned. All TPUs are operated in a military and disciplined manner. Quarters and quality of life are provided IAW existing directives and are commensurate with the rank, rate, and status of the servicemember (regular transient, disciplinary transient, etc.). TPUs serve only transient personnel to fleet units and overseas commands. TPUs do not function as a holding facility for personnel assigned to local shore commands, or personnel in a disciplinary status. Transient personnel are not to be retained on board to fill gapped or non-existent billets; they must be processed as quickly as policy permits. Where there is an established TPU in a geographic area (50-mile radius), all transient personnel as defined in the BUPERSINST 1306.77C shall be assigned to that TPU for processing. If a need for transient personnel processing at more than one activity within a geographic area, then Transient Personnel Detachments (TPDs) are established. A TPD is a department of the establishing local TPU command and will have an assigned Officer in Charge.
Mission
TPU is responsible for the efficient and expeditious processing of all transient personnel assigned and the operation of the disciplinary barracks.
TPU administrative offices are where teams of a Personnel Support Detachment and TPU staff work together to process Navy Personnel who are on their way to their next command or waiting to be discharged to the civilian community.
Our customers are Sailors traveling to a deployed or underway command, personnel being separated from a deployed or overseas command who have orders, and personnel transitioning between two commands.
