Foreign Area Officers (FAOs) are the Navy's maritime international engagement professionals, providing a unique combination of operational experience, cultural knowledge, and language expertise to the fleet. Directly supporting the National and Maritime Strategies, FAOs are force multipliers, forging critical global relationships through persistent and credible presence in 70 countries.
Lateral Transfer/Redesignation to FAO (1710)
Officers interested in redesignating to the FAO Community should visit the PERS-803 webpage for general information and procedures relative to lateral transfer/redesignation boards.
Applications must include:
Current overseas suitability screening completed to NAVCENT standards using the NAVMED 1300/1 form.
Proof of TS/SCI clearance eligibility (JPAS, SSO letter, or SF-86 if investigation not funded).
Minimum of 8 years commissioned service (YCS).
** Limited waivers granted by OCM for highly qualified candidates with 5-7 YCS as of the date the board convenes. **
Minimum standard DLAB score (currently 115).
**Limited waivers granted by OCM for highly qualified candidates with a minimum score of 95**
Candidates should be within 18 months of PRD to be accepted as a FAO.
Candidates must be available for overseas PCS at next PRD.
