A native of Los Angeles, CA, Commander Raul Acevedo graduated from the United States Navy Naval Academy in 2001, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. Following his commission in the United States Navy, he began flight training at Naval Air Station, Pensacola, FL and was designated a Naval Flight Officer in April 2003. He then reported to the Navy Super Hornet Fleet Replacement Squadron at NAS Lemoore, CA, where he completed training in February 2004 and was designated an F/A 18F Weapons Systems Officer.
CDR Acevedo began his first operational flying tour with the “Black Knights” of Strike Fighter Squadron ONE FIVE FOUR. He completed a combat cruise aboard USS CARL VINSON in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. During this tour, CDR Acevedo was selected to attend the Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOP-GUN), becoming a Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor in March 2007. Following his TOPGUN graduation, CDR Acevedo joined the “Outlaws” of Strike Fighter Weapons School Pacific where he served as the Strike Fighter Wing Pacific (CSFWP) Armed Reconnaissance/Strike Coordination and Reconnaissance Subject Matter Expert. He also served as the Forward Air Controller (Airborne) program manager for the West Coast F/A 18 squadrons.
CDR Acevedo returned to the fleet in February 2010, serving as Training Officer with the “Bounty Hunters” of Strike Fighter Squadron TWO. During this tour, he deployed twice aboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and NEW DAWN, where his squadron earned the Commander Naval Air Forces McClusky and CSFWP Battle E awards.
CDR Acevedo left Lemoore in February 2012 and reported to the “Red Ripper” of Strike Fighter Squadron ONE ONE at NAS Oceana, VA where he served as the Quality Assurance , Administration, and Maintenance Officer. During his Department Head tour, CDR Acevedo served on the Joint Staff Operations Directorate as the Air Power Joint Working Group Lead to the Deputy Director for Regional Operations and Force Management (J-35). He also served as the J-35’s lead Action Officer to the US Transportation and Central Commands.
CDR Acevedo then reported to Strike Fighter Squadron ONE ZERO SIX for F/A-18 refresher training before reporting in May 2017 as Executive Officer of the “Checkmates” of Strike Fighter Squadron TWO ONE ONE.
CDR Acevedo has accumulated over 2,600 flight hours and 400 carrier arrested landings. His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Strike/Flight Air Medal (three awards), Navy /Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and numerous campaign and service awards.
CDR Acevedo is married to the former Aileen Abate of Metairie, LA. They have 3 children; Raul, Lillian and Elizabeth.
