Master Chief Bottoms enlisted in the U.S. Navy January 23, 1991. He attended recruit training at Recruit Training Center in Great Lakes, Illinois. Master Chief Bottoms' military education includes Basic Enlisted Submarine and Fire Control "A" School in Groton, Connecticut; Fire Control Technician "C" School in Bangor, Washington; Instructor Training School in Kingsbay, Georgia; CCSMK2 BLK1C Fire Control Maintenance School and AN/BYG1 Fire Control Maintenance School in Newport, Rhode Island. Master Chief Bottoms graduated from the Senior Enlisted Academy and attended the CMC/COB Course in Newport, Rhode Island.

Master Chief Bottoms has served onboard USS OHIO (SSBN 726)(BLUE); USS WYOMING (SSBN 742)(GOLD) earning two Battle Efficiency awards; USS NEVADA (SSBN 733)(BLUE); and as Chief of the Boat onboard USS RHODE ISLAND (SSBN 740)(BLUE) earning the Battle Efficiency and the prestigious Omaha Trophy. He has served ashore at Trident Training Facility Kingsbay, Georgia and as member of Commander, Submarine Squadron ONE SIX and TWO ZERO Staff in Kingsbay, Georgia and Naval Ocean Processing Facility (NOPF) as Command Master Chief, Whidbey Island, Washington. At Tinker AFB, Oklahoma, he served as Command Master Chief, Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron Three (VQ-3). He reported to his current assignment as the Command Master Chief of Strategic Communications Wing ONE and Task Force 124 in February 2016. He is qualified in Submarines and as a Master Training Specialist.

His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards); Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2 awards); Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (6 awards); and numerous unit and campaign awards.
