CAPTAIN James A. McCall III

Hailing from Millersburg, Pennsylvania, Captain James A. McCall III received his commission from the United States Naval Academy where he graduated in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He holds a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.
Captain McCall received his Naval Flight Officer wings in May 1995 at Pensacola, Florida and reported to Fighter Squadron (VF) 101 at NAS Oceana, Virginia for initial replacement training in the F-14 Tomcat as a Radar Intercept Officer.
Captain McCall served as the commanding officer of the “Fighting Checkmates” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 211 from November of 2010 until May of 2012. While CO, the “Checkmates” deployed twice with Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1 on board USS Enterprise (CVN 65) to the 5th Fleet AOR in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM, IRAQI FREEDOM, and NEW DAWN.
Captain McCall’s operational tours began with his first fleet assignment in 1996 to the “Swordsmen” of Fighter Squadron (VF) 32. During his tour, he completed two Mediterranean / Arabian Gulf deployments aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) and USS Enterprise (CVN 65), participating in Operations SOUTHERN WATCH, DELIBERATE GUARD, DELIBERATE FORGE, and DESERT FOX, and earning selection to attend the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Course. In August 2002, he returned to the fleet with the “Red Rippers” of Fighter Squadron (VF) 11 as squadron Training Officer and deployed onboard USS George Washington (CVN 73) conducting combat operations in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. After transitioning to the FA-18F Super Hornet in 2004, he subsequently served with the “Diamondbacks” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 102 forward deployed to NAF Atsugi, Japan. Serving as safety officer and operations officer, he completed multiple Western Pacific deployments onboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63). Additionally, he served as Chief of Combat Operations for the Combined Air and Space Operations Center (CAOC), Al Udeid Air Base, and most recently as Battle Director at the CAOC in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE.
Captain McCall’s shore tours include the Strike Fighter Weapons and Tactics School, Atlantic where he served as Tactics Development Department Head; and Homeland Defense Requirements Branch Chief for the Joint Integrated Air and Missile Defense Organization, Joint Staff, in Washington, DC.
Captain McCall’s decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (Strike/Flight Award), Joint Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various campaign, unit, and service awards. He reported to Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8 as the Deputy Commander in May 2015 and assumed command in November 2016. He has accumulated over 4,200 flight hours and more than 1,000 carrier-arrested landings.
