Commander Michael Borrelli is a native of San Mateo, California. He graduated with merit from the United States Naval Academy in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Oceanography. Commander Borrelli was designated a Naval Flight Officer in December of 1999.
Following P-3C Fleet Replacement Squadron training at Patrol Squadron THIRTY (VP-30), he joined the Tridents of Patrol Squadron TWO SIX (VP-26) in Brunswick, Maine, in October of 2000. While in VP-26 he served in various positions including Legal Officer and Aviation and Ordnance Division Officer, earning designations as a P-3C Tactical Coordinator (TACCO), Mission Commander and Instructor TACCO. During his time with Team Trident he deployed to the Mediterranean, Iceland, Puerto Rico and Ecuador.
From September 2003 until August 2005, he served as the Flag Aide to Commander, Fleet Air Mediterranean, Commander, Navy Region Europe, stationed in Naples, Italy.
In October 2005, he reported aboard USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN-73) in Norfolk, Virginia, as a Catapult and Arresting Gear Officer “Shooter”. While aboard GW, CDR Borrelli served as the V-2 Arresting Gear Branch Officer and the V-4 Fuels Division Officer. He qualified as a Catapult and Arresting Gear Officer “Shooter” and Helicopter Control Officer (HCO). During his time onboard, he completed multiple surge training detachments and deployed in support of the inaugural “Partnership of the Americas" deployment.
In July 2007, Commander Borrelli reported to the Naval Postgraduate School where he earned a Master of Business Administration, specializing in Financial Management, and received the Conrad Scholar Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement in Financial Management.
In September 2009, Commander Borrelli joined the Mad Foxes of Patrol Squadron FIVE (VP-5) in Jacksonville, FL. He served as the Mad Foxes’ Administrative Officer, Training Officer, CTG 67 Operations Officer and Operations Officer, completing a deployment in support of 4th, 5th and 6th FLEET operations to include Operations ODYSSEY DAWN and UNIFIED PROTECTOR.
Following VP-5, Commander Borrelli reported to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Financial Management and Comptroller), Appropriations Matters Office (FMBE) in November 2011. As an Appropriations Congressional Liaison, Commander Borrelli was the primary Department of the Navy representative to the U.S. House and Senate Appropriations Defense Committees for all Naval Aviation and Aircraft Carrier programs. Commander Borrelli became the Executive Officer of VP-26 in May 2015.
Commander Borrelli’s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various campaign and unit awards.
