CDR Jason Higgins
Commanding Officer VFA-83
CDR Jason B. Higgins is a native of Huntsville, Texas and a 1999 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. After commissioning, he completed a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland and was designated a Naval Aviator in 2003 from VT-21 in Kingsville, Texas.
Joining the VFA-27 “Royal Maces” in 2004, CDR Higgins began his first operational tour as a member of the Forward Deployed Naval Force and Carrier Air Wing FIVE, based at NAF Atsugi, Japan. In 2007 he returned stateside, reporting to the VX-9 “Vampires” at NAWC China Lake, California where he was the AIM-9X Operational Test Director and Strike-Fighter Projects Assistant Director. From 2010 to 2012, CDR Higgins served as a Department Head with the VFA-34 “Blue Blasters” at NAS Oceana, Virginia, completing two deployments in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and NEW DAWN. He then attended the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, from which he graduated with distinction in 2013, earning a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. In 2014, he reported to VFA-83 as Executive Officer. In February 2015, during a deployment in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE, he took over as Commanding Officer of the “Rampagers”.
CDR Higgins has logged 650 arrested landings and 2,800 hours. His military awards include various individual and unit citations including four Strike Flight Air Medals and two Navy Commendation Medals. He is married to the former Gabriela Fiorilo of Buenos Aires, Argentina. They have four children: Austin, Sabrina, Nicolette, and Alessandra.
