Master Chief Gene Garland is a native of Fayetteville, North Carolina and enlisted in the Navy on April 24, 1991.  He completed Recruit Training at RTC San Diego, and attended Information Systems Technician “A” School at Naval Technical Training Center, San Diego, California.
 
Upon completion of 'A' School, Master Chief Garland was assigned to USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71).  During his tour on board he was promoted to Petty Officer Third Class in 1993. In 1995, he was assigned to the staff of Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet as Broadcast Supervisor where he was promoted to Petty Officer Second Class in 1996.
 
Following his shore tour, Master Chief Garland transferred to USS WASP (LHD 1).  During his time on WASP, he advanced to Petty Officer First Class; earned both his Enlisted Surface Warfare and Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist, selected as Junior Sailor of the Year, and converted to the Navy Counselor rating (NC).
 
After four years on board WASP, he transferred to Fleet Training Center Norfolk, Virginia.  Upon completion of Navy Basic Instructor training, he was selected to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Next, he reported to USS HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN 75), serving as Administrative Department Leading Chief Petty Officer.  During his tour on board Master Chief Garland was selected to Senior Chief Petty Officer in 2009.
 
In October 2009, Master Chief Garland transferred to Commander, Naval Service Training Command Great Lakes, Illinois, where he served as the Immediate Superior in Charge (ISIC) Career Counselor for 81 commands.
 
In 2013, Master Chief Garland transferred to Pre-Commissioning Unit GERALD R. FORD (CVN 78) as the Senior Career Counselor.  During his tour on board GERALD R. FORD, he was promoted to Master Chief Petty Officer in 2014 and was selected for the Command Master Chief (CMC) program in 2016.  Master Chief Garland joined the BLUE BLASTERS of VFA-34 as Command Master Chief in October 2016.
 
Master Chief Petty Officer Garland is a graduate of the CMC/COB course (class 170101) and the U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 196/Blue (Dragons). His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (six awards) and various unit and campaign awards. He is qualified to wear the Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist and Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist breast insignia.  He holds a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Psychology from Excelsior University and a Masters in Business Administration from Trident University. He is a certified Master Training Specialist and is certified by United States Military Apprenticeships program in Counseling and Office Management.
