CDR Matt Stevenson is a native of Houston, TX and graduated from Texas Tech University in 1998, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management Information Systems and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management. He earned his commission through Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, FL in December 1998 and designated a Naval Aviator in February 2001 in Meridian, MS.
CDR Stevenson completed F/A-18C Hornet training with VFA-106 and joined the VFA-105 in December 2001. During his initial sea tour with VFA-105 he held the positions of ADP Officer, Av/Arm Division Officer, Air to Ground Weapons Training Officer and Assistant Operations Officer. He deployed twice onboard USS HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN-75), participating in both the opening phase and later, the sustain phase of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM.
CDR Stevenson next returned to VFA-106 as an instructor pilot in May of 2005. While with the Gladiators he held the positions of Public Affairs Officer, Schedules Officer, Air to Ground Tactics Instructor, and Air to Ground Phase Head. Along with his instructor duties he also held a dual qualification in the T-34C and was selected as a member of the East Coast F/A-18C Hornet Demonstration Team.
CDR Stevenson next reported as Aide to Commander Carrier Strike Group TEN in May of 2007 again deploying in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM.
In June of 2008 he reported to Air Command and Staff College in Montgomery, Alabama, earning a Masters in Military Art and Operational Science.
In 2009, he reported to Aviation Safety School in Pensacola, Florida followed by F/A-18 refresher training and then finally joining VFA-31 in February 2010 as a department head. While with VFA-31 he held the positions of Safety Officer, Maintenance Officer, and Operations Officer, participating in the maiden deployment of USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH (CVN-77) and supporting Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and NEW DAWN.
Reporting next to the Joint Staff at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. he served as the Executive Assistant to the Deputy Director for Force Protection and Counter Weapons of Mass Destruction, J8 for 22 months.
CDR Stevenson has over 3400 mishap free flight hours, over 650 carrier arrested landings and is authorized to wear the Joint Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (five Strike/Flight), Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy Achievement Medal (two awards), as well as various unit and campaign awards.
