LtCol Michael C. Nesbitt
Michael C. Nesbitt graduated from the University of Arizona in December 1999, was commissioned a 2nd Lt from the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) program and immediately reported to The Basic School (TBS) for basic officer training with B Company 1998. Upon graduation from TBS, 2ndLt Nesbitt reported to NAS Pensacola for API, NAS Corpus Christi for basic flight training and was selected for intermediate and advanced jet training at NAS Meridian, MS in October 1999. 2ndLt Nesbitt was promoted to 1st Lt in December 1999. After receiving his wings on 11 January 2001, he was assigned to VMFAT-101 in Miramar, CA for initial training in the F/A-18 Hornet and was promoted to the rank of Captain in January 2002.
Upon completion of the Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS), Captain Nesbitt reported to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 314, Marine Aircraft Group 11 (MAG-11) in June 2002. During his time in the Black Knights, Captain Nesbitt held the billets of Powerline Officer, Embark Officer, Logistics Officer, Schedules Officer, Flight Officer and Assistant Operations Officer. Captain Nesbitt completed 2 Carrier Air Wing Nine Workups, deployed onboard USS Carl Vinson and deployed as part of the Unit Deployment Program (UDP) to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan. He completed Marine Aviation Weapons Training Squadron 1 (MAWTS-1) Weapons Tactics Instructor (WTI) ground school, Top Gun ground school, Desert Talon, the MAWTS-1 WTI course, April 2005 and Expeditionary Warfare School (EWS / non-resident), July 2006.
Captain Nesbitt checked into 3D Marine Division (3D MARDIV), Camp Courtney, Okinawa in August 2006 as the Division’s Assistant Air Officer, additionally serving as a Forward Air Controller and on the Division G-3 Staff. While serving with 3D MARDIV, Captain Nesbitt participated in multiple events and exercises including Ryuku Warrior, Ulchi Focus Lens (UFL), Balikatan, Mountain Viper and multiple other Joint / International exercises. While assigned to 3D MARDIV Captain Nesbitt completed the Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) course.
In July 2007 Captain Nesbitt checked into MAG-11 and served as the Group Assistant Operations Officer for a brief period before being assigned to VMFA-232, MAG-11 September 2007. While with the Red Devils Captain Nesbitt served as the Pilot Training Officer, Quality Assurance Officer, Operations Officer, Aviation Maintenance Officer, Director of Safety and Standardization and was promoted to Major in March 2008. Major Nesbitt completed Carrier Air Wing Eleven Workups and deployed onboard USS Nimitz, in addition, he completed Enhanced Mojave Viper (EMV) and deployed to Kandahar AB, Afghanistan as part of UDP. He completed the Flight Lead Standardization Evaluator (FLSE) certification, in accordance with MAWTS-1, in August 2009 and Marine Corps Command and Staff College (non-resident / seminar) in September 2010.
Assigned to Joint Force Headquarters National Capital Region (JFHQ-NCR), United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM), Ft McNair D.C., February 2011 Major Nesbitt served in the Joint Operations Center (JOC), J36 Current Operation Section as the Air Domain Officer until May 2012. Completing his current operations duties, he then moved within the command to the J35 Future Operations / Plans section from June 2012 until July 2013. Serving in the billet of Joint / Crisis Action Planner (CAP) and CAP team Chief he was the lead planner for all 3600 level plans (Defense of the National Capital Region series of plans). During his time with JFHQ-NCR he participated in multiple State Funeral Training and Readiness Exercises (SFTRE) and multiple stand ups of JFHQ-NCR to Joint Task Force NCR (JTF-NCR) for Defense Support to Civil Authorities (DSCA) operations including: Hurricane Irene, Hurricane Sandy, multiple National Special Security Events (NSSEs) and the 2013 Presidential Inauguration. While at JFHQ-NCR Major Nesbitt re-wrote the OPLAN 3600, completed the Strategic Planners Course (National Defense University), DSCA I and DSCA II certification courses.
July 2013, Maj Nesbitt checked into VMFAT-101, MCAS Miramar, CA for duties as an F/A-18 Fleet Replacement Squadron Instructor Pilot. Initially serving as the Plans Officer, he departed on TAD orders for a Category 3 refresh syllabus from October 2013 to January 2014 with Strike Fighter Squadron 106 (VFA-106), NAS Oceana, VA. Refresh syllabus complete he returned to VMFAT-101 and served as the Pilot Training and Plans Officer. He currently instructs Transition, Basic Fighter Maneuvers (BFM), Fighter Weapons Phase 1, Fighter Weapons Phase 2, all air to air lectures / simulators / flights and serves as a squadron Functional Check Flight pilot.
Executing PCA order onboard MCAS Miramar, CA in May 2014 Major Nesbitt began his current duties as the Marine Aircraft Group 11 (MAG-11) Operations Officer and MAG-11 Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI). Concurrently he serves as a VMFAT-101 Instructor Pilot and flies with various fleet squadrons as a Flight Lead Standardization Evaluator (FLSE). He has amassed over 2700 hours of flight time and is current in all phases of F/A-18A-D flight, holding the following qualifications and designations: Operations Duty Officer, Combat Wingman, Section Lead, Division Lead, Mission Commander, Night systems (Low), Night Systems (High), Low Altitude Tactics Qualified, Functional Check Flight Pilot (FCF), Instrument Instructor, Low Altitude Tactics Instructor (Stan Check Instructor), Night Systems Instructor (Low), Night Systems Instructor (High), Air Combat Tactics Instructor (ACTI IAW MAWTS-1), Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI IAW MAWTS-1), and Flight Lead Standardization Evaluator (FLSE IAW MAWTS-1). He was selected and promoted to LtCol on 1 Oct 20l4 and has been assigned orders to be the VFA-106 Executive Officer beginning in February 2015.
LtCol Nesbitt is married to the former Ms. Kathleen Cargnel from Pittsburgh, Pa.
