CDR Brent M. Blackmer
Commander Brent Blackmer, born and raised in Portland, Maine, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1994. While at the Academy he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in political science, graduating with Honors, while wrestling for four years.
Commander Blackmer attended flight training in Pensacola and Meridian and earned his Wings of Gold in February 1997 in Kingsville. After initial training in the S-3, Blackmer reported to VS-22 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida in May 1998. While attached to the “Checkmates” he embarked on two six-month deployments with CVW-3 onboard USS ENTERPRISE (CVN-65) in 1999 in support of OPERATION DESERT FOX and OPERATION NOBLE EAGLE and then aboard USS HARRY S TRUMAN (CVN-75) in 2000 for her maiden cruise while earning his Wing qualification as a landing Signal Officer (LSO). In 2000 Commander Blackmer was named Pilot of the Year for the East Coast Viking fleet for the second consecutive year. Later that year he was assigned to the Sea Control Weapons School while he awaited a transition to the FA-18 Hornet. He reported to VFA-106 at NAS Oceana, Virginia for follow-on training in the FA-18C in April 2001.
In December 2001, Commander Blackmer joined to the "Wildcats" of VFA-131 and deployed with CVW-7 on board USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN-73) in 2003 flying combat missions in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM (OIF). He then fleeted up to Department Head in the “Wildcats” and served as safety officer, maintenance officer and operations officer. He deployed for eight months aboard USS EISENHOWER (CVN-69) in 2006 in support of OIF, OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM and missions off the Horn of Africa.
In September 2007 Commander Blackmer reported to The Joint Staff, Operations Directorate, J-3, at the National Military Command Center where he served as the Assistant Deputy Director for Operations.
Upon completion of his 22 month tour he completed refresher training at VFA-106 prior to joining the “Ragin’ Bulls” of VFA-37 as Executive Officer in April 2010 where he completed a seven month cruise aboard CVN-75 supporting OEF and OPERATION NEW DAWN. In July 2011 he became the 37th Commanding Officer of VFA-37.
In October 2012 Commander Blackmer reported to the OPNAV Staff, N98 Directorate for Air Warfare as the Hornet Requirements Officer (RO) and later assumed the duties of the Joint Strike Fighter RO. In July 2013 Blackmer joined the Gladiators of VFA-106.
Commander Blackmer has 3700 flight hours and piloted 860 carrier arrestments. He was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Individual Air Medal, Strike Flight Air Medal (five awards), Navy Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy Achievement Medal (two awards), and numerous campaign and unit medals and citations. He is married to Dr. Shannon Blackmer and has four kids Nico, Sasha, Sean, and Kelly.
