CDR Michael E. Madrid
Commander Michael E. Madrid is a native of Vallejo, California. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Affairs from the University of Nevada in 1997. Following his commissioning from Officer Candidate School, he completed flight training and was designated a Naval Aviator in September 2000.
After completion of SH-60B training, Commander Madrid reported to the SABERHAWKS of HSL 47 in September 2001. He deployed as the Assistant Maintenance Officer with Detachment FOUR aboard USS CONSTELLATION (CV 64) for the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom. As part of the squadron’s Bravo-To-Sea initiative, he later embarked USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72) as the squadron Assistant Operations Officer for the first ever HSL squadron to integrate with a carrier air wing (CVW-2).
In October 2004, Commander Madrid reported to Great Lakes, Illinois where he served as Flag Aide to Commander, Naval Service Training Command / Commander, Navy Region Midwest. During this two-year tour, he was involved in every facet of the accession mission under NSTC and the shore infrastructure/installation management mission with NRMW.
Following his shore tour, Commander Madrid reported to USS BOXER (LHD 4) Air Department in 2006, where he served as Hangar Officer, Aircraft Handler, Mini Boss and Air Operations Officer. While deployed with the 15th MEU in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, he qualified as Officer of the Deck Underway and Command Duty Officer. Commander Madrid reported to the Naval War College in February 2008 and was awarded a Master’s Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.
In June 2009, Commander Madrid deployed to Iraq as a Joint CREW Composite Squadron ONE (JCCS-1) Electronic Warfare Officer to combat Radio Controlled Improvised Explosive Devices. Initially, he was assigned as the Brigade EWO for the 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team in Tallil, but was later assigned to higher headquarters in Balad as the Division Electronic Warfare Operations Officer.
Commander Madrid next reported to the BATTLECATS of HSL 43 where he served as Detachment FIVE Officer in Charge and squadron Maintenance Officer. During his tenure, Detachment FIVE deployed with USS CHANCELLORSVILLE (CG 62) as part of the Reagan Strike Group in support of Operations TOMODACHI and ENDURING FREEDOM. Additionally, he led the Maintenance Department during the squadron’s MH-60R transition and re-designation as HSM 73.
From February 2013 to May 2015, CDR Madrid served as an Action Officer in the Joint Staff, J-3 Operations Directorate. He managed the Warfighter Senior Integration Group (WSIG) and Antiterrorism/Force Protection (AT/FP) portfolios.
CDR Madrid reported to HSM-75 as the Executive Officer in March 2016. He assumed command of the Wolf Pack while deployed aboard USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) on 15 June 2017.
His personal awards include the Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (First Strike/Flight), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), and various unit commendations and campaign awards.
