A native of Highland Mills, NY, CDR O’Grady was commissioned in 1997 via the Naval Academy and commenced flight training in Pensacola, FL in September 1997.  Upon completion of flight training, CDR O’Grady was winged in March of 1999 and reported to HSL-40 to begin Fleet Replacement Training in the SH-60B.

    CDR O’Grady reported to HSL-44 in November 1999 for his first sea tour.  While assigned to HSL-44, he completed two deployments, one with the GEORGE WASHINGTON Battle Group onboard the USS SIMPSON (FFG-56) and one in USS KLAKRING (FFG-42) in support of Counter Narco Terrorism Operations.  He was also deployed briefly in USS YORKTOWN (CG-48) immediately following the events of September 11, 2001 in support of Operation NOBLE EAGLE.  While at HSL-44 CDR O’Grady served as a Detachment Operations Officer, Detachment Maintenance Officer and the squadron’s Quality Assurance Officer.

    In February of 2003, CDR O’Grady reported to the staff of Director, Navy International Programs Office (NIPO) in Washington, DC.  During this tour, he was responsible for the foreign disclosure policy for a variety of Naval Aviation systems, including the F/A-18 and related systems and all Navy H-60 variants.  From NIPO, he reported again to HSL-40 for refresher training in the SH-60B and then to the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center (NSAWC) where he completed the Navy’s Rotary Wing Weapons School course of study and was designated a Seahawk Weapons and Tactics Instructor (SWTI).

    CDR O’Grady then reported to the Proud Warriors of HSL-42 where he served as the squadron’s Weapons and Tactics Instructor, completed a deployment as the Officer-in-Charge of HSL-42 Detachment TWO onboard USS NITZE (DDG-94) in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, and served as the squadron Maintenance Officer.

    From September 2010 to July 2012, CDR O’Grady was assigned to United States Special Operations Command where he served as a planner on the Commander’s Global Special Operations Forces Operational Planning Team.

    CDR O’Grady graduated with merit from the U.S. Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering.  He has also holds a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University.

    CDR O’Grady’s personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (Individual Action), Navy and Marine Commendation Medal (four awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and other campaign and unit awards.                                                  

    He is married to the former Elizabeth Conlon of Central Valley, NY and they have two daughters, Madeline and Emma.
