Commander William Shipp
A native of Lansing, Michigan, CDR Shipp received his commission through the NROTC Program in 1997 from The Pennsylvania State University. Designated a Naval Aviator in February 1999 he reported to the HC-11 “Gunbearers” in San Diego, California flying the H-46D. In August 2000 he deployed on board USS TARAWA (LHA-1) in support of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit WESTPAC. His second deployment in, November 2001, was on board USS BONHOMME-RICHARD (LHD-6) with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, in support of OPERATION NOBLE EAGLE and ENDURING FREEDOM.
In March 2003, CDR Shipp reported to the HC-3 “Packrats” as an Instructor Pilot and transitioned to the MH-60S as the community phased out the H-46D. While serving as the 1st LT, Line Division Officer and Assistant Operations Officer he completed an Executive MBA from the Naval Post-Graduate School.
CDR Shipp went back to sea in February 2006 on board USS DUBUQUE (LPD-8) as the Air and Safety Officer. The ship conducted a nine month deployment in September 2006 to the Arabian Sea in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. USS DUBUQUE was awarded the 2006 and 2007 CNO Air-Capable Ship of the Year and received the Green “S” in 2007 for the top Safety Program among all LSD/LPDs from the Naval Safety Center. For his efforts, CDR Shipp was awarded the 2007 Navy League’s Admiral Vern Clark and General James L. Jones Safety Award by the Secretary of the Navy.
In August 2008, he reported as the Administrative Officer to the HS-4 “Black Knights” during their 2008 OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM deployment with CVW-14 on board USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN-76) flying the H-60F/H. Later CDR Shipp served as Maintenance Officer and made a second deployment in May 2009 in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM as well as completing a RIM of the PACIFIC Exercise in May 2010, at which time the squadron earned the CVW-14 “Golden Wrench Award” for outstanding maintenance.
Following his Department Head tour he reported to Stuttgart, Germany in September 2010 where he served as an Action Officer in J5-Plans Division at USAFRICOM. CDR Shipp left Germany in December 2012, and proudly reported as the HSC-8 “Eightballers” in September 2013.
