A native of Fremont, California, Captain Carlos Sardiello is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, class of 1990 and was designated a Naval Flight Officer (NFO) in August 1992.

Operational assignments include junior officer tour flying the S-3B Viking with Sea Control Squadron Three Three (VS-33) embarked in USS Nimitz (CVN-68) and department head tour with VS-38 embarked in USS Constellation (CV-64).  Following selection for command in 2005, Captain Sardiello transitioned to the P-3C Orion.  He was the 73rd Commanding Officer of Patrol Squadron Four Six (VP-46), the “Grey Knights”.  Subsequently selected as an Aviation Nuclear Officer in 2010, he completed numerous deployments assigned to the Forward Deployed Naval Force as Executive Officer USS George Washington (CVN-73) and Commanding Officer USS Mount Whitney (LCC-20).
           
Combat highlights include participating in the opening night of Operation Iraqi Freedom on March 21, 2003 and scoring the first, and only strike, by an S-3B Viking in Operation Iraqi Freedom with an air to ground missile on March 26, 2003.
           
Ashore, Captain Sardiello graduated from the USN Test Pilot School at NAS Patuxent River, and performed over 200 hours of flight test of numerous project aircraft with Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Twenty (VX-20).
Shore tours also include duty as an S-3B Instructor NFO at VS-41, J-6 action officer on the Joint Staff, Executive Assistant to Commander Naval Air Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, graduate of the US Naval War College and Navy Nuclear Power Training Command, as well as temporary assignments to both Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and NASA Johnson Space Center.
           
Captain Sardiello has logged over 2,700 flight hours and 500 carrier arrested landings.  He holds post-graduate degrees in Computer Science and National Security and Strategic Studies, and is a Department of Navy Acquisition Professional.  He is a recipient of the Commander Naval Air Forces Leadership Award for 2008.  Military awards include the Legion of Merit (two awards), Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Strike Flight Air Medal, and the Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards, one with Combat ‘V’) in addition to various unit and campaign awards.
