CAPT Trey Wheeler


A native of Cross City, Florida, Captain William W. (Trey) Wheeler III is a 1984 graduate of Dixie County High School, a 1988 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland where he earned his Bachelor’s of Science degree in Oceanography, and a 2008 graduate of the National War College, Washington D.C., where he was awarded a Master’s Degree in National Security Strategy.

     Captain Wheeler’s Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance tours were completed with Patrol Squadron SIXTEEN, an instructor tour with the Fleet Replacement Squadron, Patrol Squadron THIRTY, a department head tour with Patrol Squadron FORTY FIVE, Officer-in-Charge Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Weapons Tactics Unit, Jacksonville, Florida and Commanding Officer/Executive Officer of Patrol Squadron TEN, Brunswick, Maine.

     In addition to his flying tours, Captain Wheeler served as the Communications Officer and Assistant Chief of Staff for Administration/Flag Secretary for Commander, Carrier Group ONE, San Diego, California where he qualified as a Staff Tactical Action Officer for Battle Group Operations.  He also served as the ASW Operations Officer, Current Operations Officer, and Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations/Fleet Operations Officer (N3) for Commander, SEVENTH FLEET in Yokosuka, Japan where he qualified and served as a Fleet/Joint Task Force Battle Watch Captain on board USS BLUE RIDGE.

     Most recently, Captain Wheeler served as the Commanding Officer, Joint Provincial Reconstruction Team PAKTIKA, Forward Operating Base Sharana, Paktika Province, Afghanistan and Deputy Brigade Commander for Interagency/Joint Operations, Task Force YUKON, 4th BCT (ABN), 25 ID, Forward Operating Base Salerno, Khost Province, Afghanistan. 

     Captain Wheeler took command of Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing ELEVEN in December, 2010.

     Captain Wheeler’s military decorations include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal (3 awards), Air Medal, Navy and Marine Corp Commendation Medal (4 awards), Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal (2 awards), and various service/unit awards.
